UKSGL Fuel Sampler/Thief, Bottom (BTMS)
UK Sampling Gauges Ltd, BTMS samplers provide the ideal tool for obtaining liquid samples from the bottom (or at a specified distance from the bottom) of a tank or reservoir. They are used to look for evidence of water underneath oil or fuel, for example, and can take samples from the fuel/water interface, for detecting microbial growth. They can also be used to check the condition of the bottom of a tank, and to look for corrosion. They can be used to look for pollution in reservoirs or contamination in storage vessels. In fact, wherever there is a need to check the contents at or near the bottom of a tank or reservoir, the BTMS sampler meets the need. It gives information that cannot be obtained reliably by tank-side sampling, for example.
In operation, the sampler remains sealed and empty as it is lowered into the liquid, until the “leg” contacts a solid surface (usually the bottom of the tank). The valve at the bottom of the sampler then opens, and the sampler fills. Air escapes through a non-return valve at the top of the sampler. The protrusion of the leg can be adjusted, so that the sampler can take its sample from a predetermined height above the tank bottom. As the sampler is lifted, the valve re-seals, ensuring that the sample is retained and not contaminated during retrieval. The sampler therefore obtains true samples. It can take samples from any depth, as it is unaffected by outside pressure.
ATEX:
- The BTMS Sampling Gauge is NOT ATEX approved in its own right.
- The BTMS Sampling Gauge can be supplied in ATEX standard, when it is purchased at the same time as a Mk-1A Winder.
- The ATEX certificate will contain the serial numbers of both the Mk-1A Winder and the Sampling Gauge. The Winder will have an "ATEX Sticker" applied to it, and the Sampling Gauge will bear no additional markings.
- The ATEX marking is Ex II 1G IIC c T3
- Other Sampling Gauges that qualify for ATEX approval in conjunction with EACH Mk-1A Winder are: ALBTMS, ALS, ALSBV
- The ATEX certification is provided FREE OF CHARGE and automatically, when a qualifying gauge and winder are purchased
To DIN EN ISO 3170, for manual sampling of petroleum liquids.

Samplers can either be lowered with a specialised hand-winch, for smooth and clean operation, or, more crudely, with a length of cotton rope, cotton is used because it is chemically resistant to all fuels, any also fibre that enters the fuel will not harm it, what with fuel filters being made from cotton fibre also. Rope can be found in the options below, priced per metre. Hand Winches can be found by clicking the image below:
